Apollo Bay Harbour Redevelopment

Project background

We are revitalising the Apollo Bay Harbour precinct to improve public access, enhance maritime operations, and create a more inviting and functional space for the community, visitors, and local industry.

Community engagement for the project has now concluded, following extensive consultation that informed the design and planning stages.

Feedback helped shape the final concept for the harbour precinct, ensuring it reflects community values and supports the area’s cultural, recreational, and working harbour identity.

With planning and design nearing completion, construction works are scheduled to commence in early 2026.

The $12.61 million redevelopment of the Apollo Bay Harbour will provide an improved visitor experience and broaden the commercial and recreational opportunities in the precinct.

The project will deliver:

  • Upgrades and minor extension to the Apollo Bay Fisherman’s Cooperative building to accommodate an improved commercial offering and visitor experience with an improved outdoor terrace, which provides additional space and seating.
  • Construction of enhanced public open spaces, including a new public viewing deck extending over the depot roof.
  • Improvements to the existing Port Operations Depot, including facilities which create a safer workplace and provide greater visual access to the working harbour and slipway.
  • Maximise public car parking at the Mothers Beach car park and provide improved pedestrian and transport connections around the Apollo Bay Harbour Precinct.

Project Updates

12/05/2026

Redevelopment of the Apollo Bay Harbour precinct is progressing, with detailed planning, approvals and contractor appointment on track for construction to get underway soon.

The project includes:

  • upgrades to the Fisherman’s Cooperative building to improve commercial operations and boost the visitor experience with a new outdoor terrace providing more space and seating to enjoy the much-loved co-op fish and chips and the return of the wet fish market
  • improved public open spaces, including a new viewing deck to give visitors a fantastic outlook over the port and coastline
  • strengthening of the sea wall and a safer new Port Operations Depot, now redesigned to prevent significant excavation into the dune that has been found to include important cultural heritage
  • improvements to the Mothers Beach car park and better pedestrian connections
Early works, including the deconstruction of the whale viewing deck and demolition of the old depot, temporary accommodation set-up for the port office, geo-tech drilling, the removal of hazardous materials and clearing out of the Co-Op building have already been completed.

GORCAPA will work with the Apollo Bay Fisherman’s Co-Op to support them continuing to operate out of alternative locations in town while construction is underway and are looking to get them back into their building as soon as possible.

The community will still be able to access Mothers Beach and the harbour break wall during construction via an alternate access point, and the nearby Point Bunbury boat ramp will remain open throughout.

A contractor will be appointed shortly, after which detailed project timelines will be finalised. It is anticipated that project completion is now by the middle of next year.
