Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Community Values Survey for Point Grey.
We received 1,141 responses, which sets a record for our Have Your Say engagement.
The survey sought to formally capture what community members and visitors have expressed about Point Grey over many years, and to understand any changes in sentiment.
The feedback highlighted that the precinct is loved for its natural setting; its ocean and pier views; and the community-level facilities it hosts.
Most respondents want to see the character and ‘feel’ of the site, and its history as a fishing hub, maintained and recognised in any future development.
Key findings from the survey – which was made up of three sections – included:
Precinct values and character:
Views and vistas from the public open space areas are important – 80 per cent agree
The history of the site as a commercial and recreational fishing hub gives Point Grey a strong and unique character that must be preserved – 86 per cent agree
Maintaining green open space is essential to preserving the character of Point Grey – 72 per cent agree
Buildings:
Two separate buildings for the LAAC clubhouse and the new food and drinks premises is preferred – 80 per cent strongly agree
Future building designs should respect the natural surroundings and be modest in scale, with low building heights – 88 per cent agree
Building materials from the Fishermen’s Co-op should be incorporated into new buildings and precinct features, where feasible – 60 per cent agree
Use and accessibility of the precinct:
The Lorne Pier is a prized community asset, not only as a tourist attraction but also by locals for social recreation and as a meeting place throughout the entire year – 93 per cent agree
Safe and logical pedestrian access into and throughout the precinct is a priority – 76 per cent agree
Work is progressing on the planning and design phase of the project, and we look forward to sharing further updates with you shortly.
