Community input has played a key role in shaping redevelopment plans for the mixed-use site above the Torquay Angling Club at Fishermans Beach.

The site has been licensed to a commercial food and beverage operator for the past seven years under a trial arrangement, while maintaining community access to the viewing platform that overlooks the magnificent Fishermans Beach.

In 2024, we sought community input on the trial pop-up bar. This feedback has directly informed a new concept design for the site, which will maintain a food and beverage offering and better facilitate community use of the area.

Feedback highlighted that the site is highly valued by the community for social gatherings and events, and a desire to balance public access and the commercial operation.

There is also opportunity for improvements to accessibility, preserving the beach views, providing extra weather protection, and for the existing casual, surf town timber aesthetic to be retained.

We will investigate additional funding opportunities to upgrade the nearby public toilet and shower facilities that are separate from the viewing platform.

Quotes attributed to Director of Corporate Affairs and Visitor Economy Andy Mathers:

"We heard loud and clear that the site is highly valued by the community who love using it for community gatherings and a place to relax, as well as visiting the commercial bar area.

“We’re grateful to everyone who shared their thoughts on the site, and we were pleased to see most of the feedback supporting the draft concept design.

It’s clear this is a special place for the Torquay community, and our goal is to ensure public access is preserved while we deliver important upgrades to improve safety, weather protection and accessibility.”
