We will be removing a Monterey Cypress (Hesperocyparis macrocarpa) tree located behind the playground opposite Anderson St, near the Torquay Front Beach toilet block.

The tree is not safe and there is a risk it could fall down and impact people visiting the area or playing nearby.

This tree has been part of our community for many years and some may have fond memories of it. However, we have a responsibility to ensure the safety of local residents and visitors to the area.

Professional arborists have inspected the tree and found it is at high risk of large-scale stem failure. This means that the tree could fall or break without warning.

The arborists have advised there is no way to prune or treat the tree to make it safe. The only option is to remove it and replace it with a native tree as part of our Tree Replacement Plan.

The tree is due to come down in early July 2023 and is exempt from the heritage overlay because it is considered a high risk.

We thank the community in advance for staying clear of the exclusion zone until works are complete.
