Management transfer of Port Campbell National Park
Published on 02 August 2024
The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (the Authority) has been appointed as manager of the Port Campbell National Park, effective from 1 August 2024.
The Authority will take over the responsibilities of Parks Victoria and ensure the Port Campbell National Park continues to thrive and be enjoyed by locals and visitors for generations to come.
Taking management responsibility for Port Campbell National Park is a key step toward having one dedicated management authority for the whole Great Ocean Road coast and parks.
This will ensure this iconic part of Victoria is managed in a way that is specific to its unique needs and best serves the local environment and community.
Parks Victoria staff will continue to be visible in the area, as they will maintain their role in monitoring and caring for the land during the transition period.
On Kirrae Whurrung Country, Eastern Maar Nation, Port Campbell National Park is home to the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, London Bridge and The Grotto.
This National Park is of significance to the Eastern Maar and treasured by Victorians and visitors alike for its spectacular coastline, precious environment, and rich heritage.
The Authority is honoured to look after this special land and takes its responsibility as environmental stewards very seriously. The land remains a National Park and is protected under the National Parks Act as an area designated for conservation.
The Authority will be guided by the current National Park Management Plan. To ensure a smooth transition, Parks Victoria will work closely with the Authority and provide expert support in conservation science and environmental works to ensure that environmental conservation objectives are met.
Port Campbell National Park is among the 700 parcels of land and sea that are being progressively transferred to the Authority by 1 November 2025.
