Innovative signage has been installed to explain new parking conditions at the Fishermans Beach Boat Ramp in Torquay ahead of its scheduled re-opening later this week.
A key theme in community feedback was the need for more flexible parking arrangements at Fishermans Beach, while prioritising the need for trailer parking closest to the boating ramp.
In response, we will trial flexible parking conditions using electronic signage at the upgraded car park.
Parking will be prioritised for boat trailers only on the ocean side of the car park between October to April. No Standing Signs will indicate when the car parks are restricted to boat trailer access only.
When the weather is forecast as unsuitable for boating, the electronic signs will display a green P (parking symbol) to also allow general vehicle parking.
The upgrade to the car park includes:
25 car and boat trailer parks
14 car-only parks
1 accessible car and boat trailer park
3 accessible car parks
4 permit only parks (near Torquay Marine Rescue)
Parking is all-day, unless otherwise signed. A live webcam on Boating Victoria will show parking conditions.
We have balanced the need to retain the look and feel of the area while ensuring a durable, even surface on the car park. The asphalt does appear dark now, but has been designed to wear and expose the light-coloured aggregate over time.
The Torquay Outrigger Canoe Club has also been relocated to a new storage area adjacent to the Torquay Sailing Club to help maximise space in the car park.
The precinct will now operate in a one-way direction to improve accessibility and public safety, while raised pavement and crossing points have been installed to slow traffic. The precinct entry is located near the Salty Dog Cafe opposite Beach Road with an exit towards Zeally Bay Road.
Additional works, including a universally accessible ramp, seating, and other associated improvements, are set for completion later this year.
The first stage of works has been funded by Better Boating Victoria and the Department of Energy, Environment & Climate Action.

“We’re trialling a new approach to ensure we make the most of all available parking at Fishermans Beach.
It’s important to remember this is a working boat ramp, so access will be prioritised for boat and trailer parking whenever possible.
Our key priority is making it safer and easier for boaters to enjoy a day out on the water, especially during the peak summer period.”
