Pitching in to beautify the Apollo Bay Recreation Reserve

Staff from across the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority have pitched in to make camping at the Apollo Bay Recreation Reserve cleaner, greener and safer this summer.

More than 4o enthusiastic team members from across the Authority rolled up their sleeves today for a working bee to brighten up the Apollo Bay Recreation Reserve.

The working bee involved painting speed bumps and bollards to increase public safety and partnering with the Southern Otway Landcare network to plant indigenous plants across the Reserve.

This effort follows major site clearing works in July to increase casual camping opportunities at the reserve this summer, with 150 powered and unpowered options available.

The enhancements are part of the Camping Uplift project, which is backed by funding from the Victorian Government and is being delivered by the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority.

Camping at the reserve will open just in time for the September school holidays, with booking available from early September.

These improvements align with the 10-year Masterplan for the Apollo Bay Recreation Reserve, adopted in October 2023.

Construction on the Camping Uplift initiative is expected to begin in 2025, following the peak visitor season.

Quotes attributable to Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority Director Community, Corporate Affairs and Visitor Economy - Andy Mathers:

“We’re pitching in to make sure the Reserve is open in time for the September school holidays and the AFL Grand Final weekend.

It’s all about increasing camping opportunities and improving access to our beautiful coastline. The latest works will make the Reserve larger and greener, while also improving views of the Barham River.

This is the latest in a series of improvements we’re delivering for camping, recreation, and sporting facilities in the Reserve.”
