Stay Safe on the Coast: Annual Cliff Safety Campaign Kicks Off
Published on 01 February 2025
We have officially launched our annual Cliff Safety Campaign, urging locals and visitors to stay vigilant about the hidden dangers of cliff collapses along Victoria’s iconic coastline.
February marks Cliff Safety Month, an important time to raise awareness about the risks posed by unstable cliffs and bluffs, which make up 46% of the state’s coastline. These natural features, shaped by ongoing erosion, wind, and waves, attract millions of visitors each year but also pose serious hazards.
Recent incidents underscore the importance of the campaign. A cliff collapse in January near Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club and ongoing closures at Demons Bluff due to cracks serve as reminders of the unpredictable nature of these hazards.
To enhance public safety, we work with Parks Victoria to conduct regular geotechnical assessments of cliff areas, improving the understanding of coastal dynamics and informing safety measures.
Coastal Reserves Manager Caleb Hurrell emphasized the shared responsibility of staying safe:
“Cliff safety is a year-round commitment, and through this campaign, we’re doing all we can to raise awareness and share knowledge.
As captivating as our cliffs and coves are, they conceal hidden dangers. By following four simple steps – stay away from cliffs and caves, stick to established tracks, follow warning signs, and spread the word – we can help keep everyone safe.”
Four Key Cliff Safety Tips:
- Stay Away from Cliffs and Caves: Cliff collapses can occur without warning, and loose rocks pose serious risks.
- Stick to Established Tracks: Tracks and barriers are in place to protect visitors from unstable areas.
- Follow Warning Signs: Signs are based on expert advice and highlight known risks.
- Share the Word: Talk to friends and family to spread awareness and keep everyone informed.
We invite everyone to enjoy the natural beauty of the coastline responsibly.
Stay safe and make the most of your time along the Great Ocean Road.
